This presentation is for those who want to better understand the cultural context of what they read in the Bible. Why did Ruth marry Boaz? Why did midwives name the newborn?

    Young adults (20s and 30s) are invited to a new "Faith and Film" series. How are God and Christians depicted in film? Are these depictions accurate? What about “Christian themes” such as forgiveness, love, compassion, and apocalyptic visions of the end of the world, how are these themes treated in popular films? These and many other questions will be explored in the “Faith and Film” series in which we will watch clips from different movies and discuss them in light of the biblical narrative.

    Using the lectio divina method for small groups, we will pray various scriptures and even some spiritual classics. Instead of focusing on facts and background information, lectio divina guides participants to seek to hear God speaking to us through the scriptures.  A long term commitment is not required.  You may participate as your schedule permits. This is an on-going class gathered weekly to choose a text and invite God to speak through this text.

    In the Gospel of Mark, we are told that Jesus did not speak to the disciples without a parable. The stories were not always easy to understand and Jesus had to explain them. In all of them, Jesus is trying to teach them something about what God is like and how to experience the reign of God in a new way in the person and ministry of Jesus.

    We will look at ten parables in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke.
